Introduction to Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders
Welcome to the Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders Beginners Course! This course is suitable for clinicians who are new to the Schema Therapy model would like to learn the model from scratch, as it applies to people with eating disorders
Lessons
Introduction to the Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders Course: Beginners GuideModule 1: Schema Therapy Rationale and Conceptual Model for Eating Disorders
In this module we explore the rationale for using Schema Therapy with the Eating Disorders population – in particular given the high levels of comorbidity & complexity in this population. We also explore the conceptual mode, especially the role of attachment & emotional ‘vitamins’ in the development of schemas that drive eating difficulties as well as low mood and other comorbidities.
Lessons
Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders: Rationale & Overview of Conceptual ModelModule 2: Introduction to Early Maladaptive Schemas that drive Eating Disorders
In this module you will learn about schemas, schema operations , and the ways in which eating behaviours operate as a mechanism for coping with underlying schemas (& associated unmet emotional needs).
Lessons
Schemas & Schema Coping in Eating Disorders Getting to know the Schemas Understanding Modes Parts 1 & 2Module 3: Assessment and Mode Mapping in Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders
This module includes a range of assessment methods that can be utilised to identify links between eating-based coping and unmet emotional needs, or ‘vitamins’.
You will also be introduced to the concept of mode mapping – conceptualising eating (and other) behaviours in terms of schema modes.

In this module you will be introduced to using specific techniques designed to challenge core beliefs – the cognitive components of early maladaptive schemas – that drive eating disorders. This includes Reviewing the Evidence Exercise, Point-Counterpoint Chairwork, and Schema Dialogue techniques. Many clients with eating disorders can feel more comfortable working on the cognitive component of their schemas before working on them at an experiential level. However, in most cases these techniques are interwoven throughout the therapeutic process.

Imagery Rescripting is a powerful technique for ‘messing with the meaning’ of early experiences linked to schema development. By revisiting early memories and focusing on providing corrective emotional experiences that operate as an antidote to unmet emotional needs, we can begin to heal the schema and enable our clients to learn to recognise direct ways of getting their needs met (as opposed to relying on eating coping behaviours)

In this module we will begin to explore the ways in which limited reparenting operates as the linchpin of schema therapy. In this module, we will look at ways of ‘tuning in’ to your client’s experience, to begin to challenge the schemas that drive insecure attachment patterns – in particular, Emotional Deprivation and Abandonment schemas. We also introduce chairwork as a method for introducing the client to their modes, as well as bypassing coping modes that drive eating behaviours and block emotional connection in therapy sessions.
